I disagree. This last scene actually shows, sub-textually, that Data indeed managed to become more than the sum of his programming. Brent Spiner’s delivery of the last line contains the subtlest bit of coldness that shows that Data was actually hurt by Jenna breaking up with him. On a very deep level, buried deep within his programming. It’s in these small moments that Spiner was best at show Data’s growth as a sentient being.

Very good episode. What I like about it too is that even though he couldn’t satisfy the emotional needs of Jenna, his cat was perfectly content with him. Animals are not as demanding. Touching episode and quite thought provoking….

Data is an android incapable of feeling emotions, and, according to this episode he will remain so. Jenna is coming out of a hurtful relationship and is pursuing a relationship that may seem sweet, but is devoid of feeling. She just wanted to feel close to a man. Data’s incomprehension may seem secondary, but I believe that Data is truly the one to be pittied. His deletion of the dating program was almost as sad as his incorporation of Lul’s (his daughter’s) program into his own.

the impact the last part has makes one feel bad for data not being able to feel, but perhaps it also shows how shalow Jenna is for not alowing him to grow more and “reach” beound his grasp, perhaps even helping him to do it.
